Chris Pine talks Star Trek 2

Chris Pine recently talked about Star Trek 2 with Total Film. (For those who wanted an update regarding the movie)

Star Trek came after Batman Begins’ straight-faced retake of a pop-culture phenomenon made realism and grit the go-to tone for big screen reboots… and chose to follow its own path.

Whereas Christopher Nolan’s Wayne skulked in the shadows, J.J. Abram’s Kirk lived in a world so bright it caused near-constant lens-flare. And where Batman’s fists got bruised and bloodied from multiple body-blows, Jim’s fists swelled to ten times their usual size, for the purposes of a quick belly-laugh.

So when we sat down with Chris Pine to discuss Star Trek 2 for our sci-fi issue (on-sale now!), it shouldn’t have surprised us to hear the sequel wouldn’t be adhering to the usual Part 2 pitch of “like the original, but darker…”

“We’re not making Batman. That’s not our deal,” Pine told us.

“There’s comedy, which I think J.J. does a great job of, but, like the first one, there’s some serious issues being dealt with. And I’d say the threat is even greater in this one.”

“The force [the Enterprise crew] are met with is much more frightening. It’s relentlessly action-packed and in terms of character development it goes places you’d never expect. The arc is huge for all the characters. It’s a really big story - I can’t hype it enough!”

Sounds good to us.

Star Trek 2 will be released in the UK on 17 May 2013. We’re going to start queuing now.

“I loved that it danced this line of being so familiar and relatable and real, yet being absolutely, ridiculously comedic and out of this world and broad.”

The Film Experience: Zachary Quinto's Love Letter

After my love letter to Noah Taylor I thought it might be kind of fun to write to some people for The Film Experience and ask THEM who they’d want to write a love letter to. Hopefully this is making some kind of sense. So I made a little dream list of people I respect and admire beyond all reason and I sent them a little e-mail saying:

I’ve seen you do work that has made me want to write you a love letter because it’s moved me so deeply. Who or what would you like to write a love letter to? What piece of art or artist or feeling has moved you in this way?”

Here are a few amazing responses I got from these talented and passionate individuals!

To the magnificent & unique Zachary Quinto “my love letter to you is mostly me obsessing about: Angels In America!”

Zach’s love letter:

I remember so vividly the first time i saw IL POSTINO. i was a freshman in college - completely ravenous for creative inspiration - and i found myself alone at one of the only art house movie theaters in pittsburgh at the time. i was so enraptured by the experience. the tenderness and intimacy of the story. the beauty of the landscape. the powerful exploration of love. and in particular the performance of massimo troisi. it stays with me to this day: his subtlety. his vulnerability. his openness. his humor. and as i learned more about the film and the tragedy of its star - my genuine love for the movie blossomed into something that still inspires me any time i think about it. troisi’s commitment to this story ultimately cost him his life. he died just twelve hours after the film wrapped - and only days before he was meant to go to london for the heart transplant that likely would have saved him. but his connection to the project (which he also co-wrote) was so absolute and unwavering that - even in the face of his obviously weakened state - he would not back down until it was complete. and you can see it on screen. his passion and investment in the story is one of the most bittersweet manifestations i have encountered. i love that film and i love that performance. and i love the memory of the first time it all washed over me.

"Growing Up and Other Lies" filming in New York

Zach has started to film his upcoming movie, Growing Up and Other Lies in New York:

So, we’re happy to report one of our Twitter followers, @quakerina, finally spotted them around 111th St and Broadway in NYC this afternoon!

The movie, which follows four friends who make a pact to walk the length of Manhattan together before one of them plans to move out of the city, stars Taran Killam, Amber Tamblyn, Adam Brody, and Zachary Quinto.
